Standard Chartered is the oldest foreign bank in China, and the only Bank to remain open for business continuously since setting up our first branch in Shanghai in 1858.

This longevity of service – we are entering our third century – in one of the key global strategic markets is a real benefit to clients.  Standard Chartered Bank is at the forefront of supporting and servicing the huge investment flows between China and Africa, and indeed the rest of Asia and the world. Our global network is pivotal in assisting Chinese enterprises in their development overseas. We are also leading the way in helping international clients navigate the complexities of the local banking and regulatory environment. And we are helping drive the evolution of the banking system and the embracing of international products and services.

In China, since local incorporation in 2007, all Standard Chartered branches are able to serve clients’ RMB requirements.  We were among the first foreign banks in China to be allowed to trade derivatives and to serve as a custodian bank for Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (QFlls).

In Hong Kong, Standard Chartered is one of the three bank note issuing banks and is publicly listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. We are a strong presence in the community having first established offices there in 1859. Hong Kong is a key Asian hub for our wholesale banking business and is the regional hub for many of our specialist teams.

We established our first offices in Japan in 1880 and continue to build strongly in this key financial market.

In Taiwan, Standard Chartered first established a presence in 1985 and then we added significantly to our operations with the acquisition of Hsinchu International Bank in 2006.
